6 ways to stretch your moving budget

Moving isn't just stressful, it can be expensive too! Here are some simple yet effective tips for stretching your moving budget further.

1. Move during down-times

If you can, try to avoid scheduling your move for weekends, the beginning or end of the month, or summer. These are the busiest times for moves. The quality moving companies are often booked well in advance. Some moving companies will give you a lower price for their down-times. Just ask!

2. Plan your moving meals

Meals for the last few days in your old home and first new days in the new home can be tricky because your kitchen will mostly still be packed up. Many people rely on delivery or takeout for these days, which can quickly add up to a big expense. Save money by packing a "survival box" with simple meals for those days of the move. For takeout and delivery, look for coupons (and be sure to get coupons before you are tired and hungry from the move!)

3. Make sure you get your security deposit back

Landlords will notoriously find just about anything wrong with your rental in order to deduct a fee from your security deposit. Take some time to thoroughly clean your old place and fill in any dents or holes. This extra time spent can really pay off by getting you your money back!

4. Sell items you don"t want to move

As soon as you realize you are moving, start sorting items that you don't want to take with you. Many of these items can probably be sold. Just make sure to list them for sale well in advance. If you are holding a garage sale, it should be done at least 1 month before the move. Be careful about selling furniture. You might not realize how expensive it is to replace it.

5. Get a tax deduction for moving

If you are relocating because of a job, you can deduct some of the moving expenses from your taxes. Also, if you donated any items you don’t want to move, get a receipt from the charity. This donation might also be tax deduct-able.

6. Look online for free boxes

It generally isn't a good idea to pack with used boxes from places like the grocery store. They aren't very sturdy and might have mold or insects in them. Reserve used boxes for light items. Look online at places like Craigslist for free boxes. You can also get better-quality used boxes from furniture stores instead of relying on dirty grocery store boxes.
